Amidst the green pines and blue lakes of northwoods Wisconsin Jake and Pete grew up best friends. In their junior year of high school Pete places third in state wrestling with dreams of winning it all the next year. Jake is an allconference basketball player with a bright future in the sport. The death of Pete the summer before their senior year rocks the small town of Birch Falls. No one is more affected than Jake who withdraws from school, sports, and friends. Eventually he decides to try to win a state championship in wrestling in place of Pete even though he has never wrestled. He struggles early in the season until he meets and is trained by Andy, the town's only former state champion and current town drunk. As he chases the impossible Jake learns more than just wrestling moves, begins to pull out of his depression, begins to fall for Aimee, and learns the real reason Andy drinks and that he is not the only one that has had to bury someone.

This book had me hooked from beginning to end. Having grown up in the area where the story takes place, it really hit home for me and stayed true to how small towns deal with tragedy and how they come to rally around hometown heroes. The main character is someone everyone knows and can relate to, and the way his emotions and reasoning is portrayed is spot on. The author was really able to convey how a high school athlete copes with hard times and uses his emotions to bring himself back after a loss. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone.Product details

Bury the Dead Jeff Rousselow 9780557071296 Books Reviews
This is a great story for those of us who live or work in a small town. Although anyone would enjoy the story, the life stories told in Bury The Dead hit home for people who appreciate the intensity of small town athletics or know what it's like to deal with tragedy in a community where everybody knows everybody else. As I read the book, I could picture members of my own community as the characters described in the book. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a touching story delivered in a straightforward, easy to read style.
I was reading this book and set it down to get a cup of coffee. I came back to find my teenage son had picked it up and just started reading. He realy connected to the storyline. I joked with him that it is the 'Outsiders' of his time. I didn't take the book back and instead let him continue to read and then snuck the book back after he went to bed. I found that I couldn't put it down and as such, finished it the same day I started. My wife soon found herself in the same boat.
This is a great story, and while only the authors first offering that I know of, I found myself drawn to the characters and excited to read on. I look forward to his next title.
I recommend this book to anyone, especially those with teenagers that, like all teenagers, are trying to find out where they belong and how to fit in, especially in difficult circumstances.
