A conversation with Sheri Kohlmann examines Guided Autobiographies classes. Robert Yehling adds two pieces of entirely different slant and direction “Finding Clay Marzo’s Voice,” about his work with an autistic surfing great that became the acclaimed biography Just Add Water; and his lively interview with fictionist-memoirist-artist E.E. King, whom the late, great Ray Bradbury regarded as a daughter and protégé for many years. Another fine work comes from Denis Horgan, who relates life as the editor-in-chief of a Bangkok newspaper during the Vietnam War. In addition to the biography and memoir pieces, this issue is full of submissions from contributors of ten different countries, including many new and first time poets. Brian Gillespie’s epic poem, “The Collection on His Shelf.” New contributor Dennis Glauber relays history, humor, and pathos that he found in what might be “right” about the “left” in his poem, “Reading from Right to Left.”

You can pick out any page, toss it in the air, turn it upside down and let the words fall where they may—and you are bound to be enlightened. That’s because Publisher Charles Redner and Editor Robert Yehling have done it again—pieced together a remarkable and, this time, highly personalized collection of novel excerpts, poems, interviews, stories, and essays in the latest edition of their HUMMINGBIRD REVIEW.
It begins with Redner’s tribute to his late friend Michael Blake, the outspoken author best known for his novel DANCES WITH WOLVES, the screenplay version of which won an Oscar and will be remembered by screenwriters living and dead for Blake’s breaking every Academy Award rule in having a Lakota Sioux Indian mount the stage to translate his acceptance speech after he gave it.
Yehling’s interview with Elizabeth (E. E.) King exposes the heart and soul of the award-winning poet and artist with special concentration on her unique relationship with Ray Bradbury, whom she grew up admiring—from afar, at first, and then up-close. There is plenty to admire also in the four of her offerings, concluding with SIGNS THAT THE END OF THE WORLD IS NEAR (OR, MAKING PINK LEMONADE):
You watch,/ Hoping you will see a soul rise./In the West./
Like an omen./The world is not finished yet.
Don’t go away. There is more, much more.
Excerpts and essays by Denis Horgan, Aileen Goodson, Rondi Brown, Adelaide White, and Yehling himself. Poetry by Gloria Creed-Dikeogu, Sadiqullah Khan, William Langtry, Jon Arno, Lynn Bronstein, Cynthia Buhain-Baello, Hazel W. Frew, Brian Gillespie, Robin D. Hudechek, John Harney, Lisa Lunney, Amy Mosher, Linton Robinson, John Rouleau, Michael Scofield, Ruth Treeson, Sacha Wamsteker, J. Matthew Waters, Raja Williams, and Yehling again.
Of all the delightful gems the one that glowed brightest for me was the excerpt from A TASTE OF ETERNITY, the memoir by Martha Brookhart Haldo, featuring the auto accident that left her pronounced clinically dead three times.
“Blood pours profusely from my ears, smearing across my face. It gushes into my chest, my stomach, filling my body with its heaviness. A tingling sensation runs up my legs. I lie on the road, trying to live….”
It takes an author like Haldo to serve us enlightenment through near tragedy. But it’s what we’ve come to expect from HUMMINGBIRD. And with this issue there’s a peculiar live-wire gusto of enlightenment that will leave us hungry for more from each and every author.

Truly a remarkable collection, a new high point for Publisher Charles Redner and Editor Robert Yehling. Established greats Robert Blake and Michael C. Ford together with lesser know but brilliant writers. Fantastic!
